Classified Ads - A Way To Advertise For All

By Alex Wu

The advertising industry has grown by leaps and bounds in the last half century and its growth has been fueled by the development of different media which aid in the mass dissemination of information. Although there are many forms of popular advertising methods, the most common of these are known as classified ads.

The reason why they are called classified is due to the fact that they are sorted into various classes for the benefit of the target audience. Category titles that are commonly found in printed publications are Automotive, real estate, buy or Sell etc. There are some publications that are devoted to the cause of advertising and are very popular with the public. Such ads can also be found in the yellow pages of mainstream print media publications.

A classified ad may consist of a few lines that sometimes generically describe the product, services or goods that are to be sold and at other times go into specific details. For example, there are ads that sometimes list automobiles for sale but don't include the pricing or make of the automobile but only a contact number. There are also other kinds of ads that state specific details such as the color, year, make and model and price information for the product that is on sale. The reason for this kind of variation is the mechanism employed by the publisher to charge for these ads.

The cost of an ad is calculated based on the number of words or letters used, the type and size of the font used, the space occupied by the advertisement on a page. There are additional factors that contribute to an increase in the price like the inclusion of graphics or highlighting of the ad space or even the positioning and placement of the ad box on a page.

The classified ads industry generates an annual income close to 100 billion dollars worldwide. This is not just from the ads displayed in the printed media though. There are television channels that air classified advertisements during non prime time slots. Cable television operators also make a quick buck out of selling local precuts of the cable network in the neighborhood. Radio stations also air advertisements in between programs that are sometimes funny and ear catching.

The classified advertising business that is focused on print media is increasingly facing competition from the emergence of web based advertising portals like craigslist, gumtree, sulekha etc. These sites allow the posting of detailed ads which are more specific and do not depend on short monosyllabic sentences to convey their meanings compared to the print media publications.

Another advantage is that, since these are web based, they are indexed and searchable. Moreover, to boot it all, most of these e-advertising websites don't charge a penny and are completely free. Ironically, instead, their income is generated through online click based advertising and is directly proportional to the traffic generated by the site. The more the traffic the greater is the revenue.

The advantages in ease of use and access to these web based advertising options have increasingly overshadowed the archaic and cumbersome process of advertising through the printed media. As the enormous resources of the internet and its access and appeal to the common man increase day by day, the threat that it poses to traditional forms of advertising increases proportionately.

It seems too complex and extremely broad for me.

I've been surfing online more than 4 hours today, yet I never found any interesting
article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me.
In my view, if all webmasters and bloggers made good content as you
did, the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.
